Frequently Asked Questions about Gravel Root Extract
What is Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum)?
Gravel Root is a tall North American perennial of the daisy family (Asteraceae), botanically Eupatorium purpureum and now often reclassified as Eutrochium purpureum. The part used here is the root. The plant goes by several names: gravel root, Joe Pye weed (the same plant grown in gardens), queen of the meadow, and purple boneset. Gravel root naturally contains compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which is an important safety consideration described below. Our extract is offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the important liver-safety note below before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Eupatorium purpureum root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life. See the safety note below before use.
Is queen of the meadow the same as meadowsweet, and what about Joe Pye weed?
This is an important clarification, because names overlap here. Gravel root is sometimes called queen of the meadow - but that exact name is also widely used for a completely different plant, meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), which is in the rose family and is not related to gravel root. Our product is Eupatorium purpureum, the gravel root, and it is NOT meadowsweet. Gravel root is, however, the same plant as Joe Pye weed, the tall native wildflower grown in gardens - just a different common name for Eupatorium purpureum. You may also see the botanical name written as Eutrochium purpureum, which is the updated classification of the same plant. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Eupatorium purpureum) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with meadowsweet or any other plant.
How do I use Gravel Root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use as directed on the product label, or as directed by your qualified healthcare practitioner. Because this herb has important safety considerations, do not exceed the directed amount and do not use it for prolonged periods. Please read the important liver-safety note below before use.
Is Gravel Root right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. Gravel root naturally contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, a group of compounds that can be harmful to the liver. For this reason, do not use gravel root for prolonged periods of time, do not use it if you have any liver condition, and stop using it and consult a physician if you notice any signs of liver trouble, such as unusual fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). Do not use gravel root during pregnancy or while nursing, and do not give it to children. It may also have a diuretic effect. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested amount. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
